Unlike search engines, a stigmergic system is not based upon a central database of categorized information or a prime site. It is a virtual system, which operates invisibly in the background and can be tapped into from many different locations around the Web.

The information is held in the memories of agents that exist as independent entities. Access to these agents and their memories is from a number of associate sites, who are in collaboration to provide a common resource.
