The Entrepreneurial Web
Chapter 11
The Industrial Age concept of a team is not appropriate for collaboration on the Internet

Mapping across to the Internet

It might seem that my experiences in Hyper Hyper have only a vague relevance to e-business and e-commerce. This would be the case to anyone who hasn't acquired the knack of abstracting the essential details from a situation and putting them into a form where the crucial elements can be mapped across to other environments. If you know the trick, the essential essence of the Hyper Hyper success can be applied to the Internet

Using the modelling environment of Hilbert space, you can say that this whole episode in my business life can be described by two solutions points in a Hilbert space: where the dimensions are people. This abstraction would proceed as follows:

Problem 1 - the design side strategy

How do I succeed in a highly competitive environment where I'm competing against highly expert specialists.

Solution

Find a place in Hilbert solution space where there are lots of people who will be able to give you all the appropriate information.

Result

Hyper Hyper is the optimum place to be in Hilbert space because it is the spot where the people dimensions are most appropriate to supply the necessary information.

Problem 2 - the supply side strategy

Having got a solution to the design side information, how do I arrange to find suitable product.

Solution

Find a spot in Hilbert space where there are a lot of different people who have the kind of products that are being pointed to by the people in problem 1's solution space.

Result

Berwick Street and the surrounding area is the point in Hilbert solution space where the people dimensions are most appropriate to supply the products.

The whole situation is now transferred to a simple model in your head. Two solution spaces, one feeding information to the other. This can now be applied to any situation where there is the kind of problem that involves what to do and how to do it. Let's now take each of these solutions in turn and apply them to the Internet.
